S. Carolina Republicans pick Obama

As expected, Newt Gingrich won a huge 12 point victory in S. Carolina. I think this is a lot worse for Romney than the most observers are willing to admit at this point. He has consistently been a weak candidate during the primaries when viewed through a prism that includes his last run in 2008.

Unfortunate Mitt Romney Ad- If Republicans in S. Carolina did pick a President tonight, it was Obama.

The trouble is that Mitt can't close the deal with his own party- either Republicans don't trust him because he's a Mormon or he's too much of an elite to garner support with the the growing undercurrent of populist rage. This rage crosses party lines and Romney is uniquely susceptible to attacks on this front, especially because he's thus far refused to release his tax returns.

What everyone is now waiting for is Newt's implosion. It could come after he's become the nominee, which would be truly tragic for Republicans.

What you're seeing is a party out of ideas, out of talent, and with no serious crediblity on it's ability to govern trying to find a palatable path to a victory. You have to suspend rational thought to think that Gingrich is more electable than Romney nationally, but this seems to be what Republicans in S. Carolina did tonight.

Newt Gingrich- "the electable candidate"
