S. Carolina Republicans pick Obama

As expected, Newt Gingrich won a huge 12 point victory in S. Carolina. I think this is a lot worse for Romney than the most observers are willing to admit at this point. He has consistently been a weak candidate during the primaries when viewed through a prism that includes his last run in 2008.

Unfortunate Mitt Romney Ad- If Republicans in S. Carolina did pick a President tonight, it was Obama.

The trouble is that Mitt can't close the deal with his own party- either Republicans don't trust him because he's a Mormon or he's too much of an elite to garner support with the the growing undercurrent of populist rage. This rage crosses party lines and Romney is uniquely susceptible to attacks on this front, especially because he's thus far refused to release his tax returns.

What everyone is now waiting for is Newt's implosion. It could come after he's become the nominee, which would be truly tragic for Republicans.

What you're seeing is a party out of ideas, out of talent, and with no serious crediblity on it's ability to govern trying to find a palatable path to a victory. You have to suspend rational thought to think that Gingrich is more electable than Romney nationally, but this seems to be what Republicans in S. Carolina did tonight.

Newt Gingrich- "the electable candidate"

Newt 2012

I haven't written much about election season so far, mostly because it's been so damn boring. Last night, however, I was truly excited for what might transpire in the Republican primary. I'm hoping for a strong Gingrich victory tomorrow, not because I think he'd be an easier candidate for Obama to defeat (he probably would be), but because he's so entertaining to watch.

Check out this instant classic from the opening minutes of last night's debate:

Nevermind that Gingrich cheated on and divorced on his first wife while she was in the hospital suffering from cancer, nevermind that he actually did partake in an open marriage with his second wife, nevermind that this is the same guy who led the charge to impeach Clinton for his transgressions- Newt can turn all that around and blame the media, literally moving the audience to their feet! That's talent! It's no wonder he's leads in South Carolina by 6 points:

I still think that Gingrich, while a more formidable debater overall, will lose to Romney for the nomination because he has so much baggage that if he were to buy an airline ticket, he'd have to double the cost because of all the charges he'd rack up for it. He is, regardless, the most entertaining and charismatic candidate left and I'm looking forward to upcoming fight for Florida.

Facebook acquires Blue Bottle

Lost in the news about Facebook acquiring Gowalla is the news that Facebook has bought the mini-San Francisco/Brooklyn coffee chain Blue Bottle. Arguably their most ambitious and risky acquisition yet, it remains to be seen how Facebook will leverage the amazing barista talent that remains Blue Bottle's core strength.

It's also unclear if the Blue Bottle shops will remain operational or if all staff and equipment will relocate to Facebook's headquarters. There were also leaks of mockups for Facebook's new mega-headquarters, slated to be completed by 2013:

"Seven in ten of the survey respondents believe that Facebook is all for public sharing, and with its most recent changes, particularly the one which allows you to ‘subscribe’ to other users, that isn’t surprising."
